I used to be fanatical about cleaning but over the years and having twins I have become not so obsessed and let the "clean freak nazi" become a weeny bit more relaxed.  With our busy lifestyles and our need to allow more time to play sketch, I like to clean with little effort, so here is one of my favourite kitchen cleaning tips.

The oven, we all hate cleaning it and it is even harder to get the oven racks clean without developing tendinitis from hard scrubbing.

Your laundry sink must be metal (doesn't work in the plastic tubs) put the plug in, lay a length of alfoil on the bottom, then line the sides with alfoil.  Lay your oven racks in the tub (u put them in first and it keeps the foil in place) then throw in one cup of washing powder and fill with hot hot water until covered.  Leave for a few hours - overnight is great - and when the water is cooled use a nail brush or scrourer, the gunk just slides off. Rinse with clean water and rub with dry cloth ....they should be sparkling like new!

Oh I like that!  We bought a small bench top oven... easier to keep clean!
(and after 18 months had to get it replaced under warrantee... so it still sparkles like new  Grin )

Another technique is to spray the racks with oven cleaner and place in large black trash bags and lay out in the sun for a few hours.  Take them out of the bags and rinse with a hose.  You should have to do very little scrubbing.

Gawd, I have to remember the oven rack cleaning tips.  The oven is self-cleaning, but that really messes up the racks to leave them in.  I will definitely try the 'put them in the black trash bags outside in the sun' trick.  Will let you know how it works!

I did it!  Today I went on a cleaning binge, and part of it consisted of cleaning the oven.  The self-cleaning oven part was of course, easy, but those stupid racks, what to dooooooo.  THEN, I remembered Penny's tip about the trash bags.  IT WORKED!  THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!  Those racks haven't been so clean in YEARS.  In the past, i've scrubbed on them in the laundry sink, but it's always a pain, because the sink isn't really big enough, and there are always those really hard black spots on the bottom of some of the rungs.  Today, the hose took off all of the brown, and I barely had to scrub to get the black areas off!  I LOVE YOU PENNY!!!  Applaud - bravo - more Ecstatic

Not exactly a kitchen cleaning tip as such, but I heard one today which I've not tried but sounded, um ... well, you decide.

Use cabbage leaves to clean pewter! Blink Dunno

I presume they mean raw cabbage leaves, but I'm not sure!! Lol

Anyone tried it?

I have heard of that before, Ding...I think it's a pretty old way to clean it though, and I seem to remember salt being involved somewhere in there too. Have never done it myself, though.

 Giggle

Yep...and rots your gut...noice

And while we're talking about Coke....forget Diet Coke...or any other diet drink that contains Aspartame. Many people have developed Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fybromyalgia, and other chronic muscle and nerve diseases...many of which have suddenly 'recovered' after stopping their daily fill of diet drinks. Aspartame is a dangerous and incidious ingredient!

I nag people to death about 'aspartame' - it really should be banned. I tell people who drink diet drinks to go do some research on it. My best friend lets her 11yr drink diet coke and I go off my chops. Blush

Good on ya, Ozzie...and you just keep doing it! To heck with keeping it quiet. It is a most dangerous substance, yes, and I can't believe it's even allowed to be used IN the darn drinks in the first place.

SAY NO TO ASPARTAME

I never drink sodas...period... or any other diet drinks for that matter, but I do have a question:  In my tea or coffee (one or two cups in the morning) I use Splenda, three packets per cup.  Is it considered to be bad too?

Splenda isn'y brilliant, Poots. You might want to check out this site...

A safe alternative to sugar, is Stevia. You can get this in liquid or powder form. Stevia is a natural herb (I grow it in my garden) and it is something like 100 times sweeter than sugar.
